Ending Mass Shootings & Gun Violence
We need common sensible gun regulations - that preserve the right to bear arms but protect Americans from gun violence and domestic terrorism.
The gun violence epidemic has plagued our communities for decades now. In Florida, since the Parkland shooting of 2018, we have had over 1,000 murders in our state, including 15 mass shootings where the attack claimed four or more victims. Florida also had nine children, aged 0-11, killed by guns, with another twenty five injured.
In 2019 alone, gun violence claimed 15,296 lives in our country. The Second Amendment is sacrosanct and enshrined in the Constitution, the very document every Member of Congress and service member swears to protect. However, we must carry out the right to bear our arms responsibly.
As your Representative, Guido will work for:
Closing the gun show loophole. There are Federal government authorized sellers that are required to conduct background checks - and there are those who are not required to be licensed - who sell at gun shows without background checks. Guido will work to close the gun show loophole that allows private firearm owners to sell guns at gun shows without conducting background checks or maintaining records of these purchases. Banks need to "know their customer" before opening a bank account; gun show sellers should know thier buyers before selling weapons capable of killing dozens.
Background checks. It is crucial that those who possess firearms do not have a record of domestic abuse, violence, sexual assault, and other aggressive behaviors. We must improve the background checks and the reliability of the systems we depend on to ensure that those who own and possess firearms are capable of responsible ownership without being a threat to society.
Private party sales. An estimated 20% of gun sales are private party sales. These sales can be highly unregulated, and can allow dangerous individuals to skirt required background checks. It is time to require private party sales to be regulated in a way that provides more protections for society.
Study the phenomenon of mass shootings. Understanding is the first step to eradicating this tragic phenomenon. While smarter gun control measures are critical, until we understand what causes people to commit gun violence, we wont be able to stop the root causes. I support funding the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to study gun violence.
End the NRA's stranglehold on Congress.
Ban bump stocks. Bump stocks make it easier to turn a semi-automatic weapon into a fully automatic weapon. Banning bump stocks would make it more difficult to turn a legal weapon into an illegal weapon.
